One of the biggest problems people have in choosing among their career options is the feeling of being trapped. Often, in all matters of life, you are likely to be your biggest obstacle. It might seem like a cliché, but it is only clichéd because it is true. In career choices as in everything, people are often limited by self-imposed rules.
Perhaps they're still trying to please their parents with their choice of job career. Perhaps they are burdened with financial worries and afraid to pay to see a career counselor. Perhaps they feel they have no time to go to school, or else they failed the first time and don't want to try again. Whatever the reason, you probably have more career choices than you really know of. Things might be tough now, but they aren't too tough to make a difference in your own life. Choosing the right career options is mostly a matter of perking up, taking stock of your resources, and determining to make things better.
Don't start off by charging into the fray! When you are looking for a new career option, it might help to take a little bit of time to yourself. Go out for some coffee, bring a notebook and a novel you like to read, and relax for gods sake! Only then can you comfortably look at your career options. Are you happy with your chosen career? Are there things that you have wanted to try but never gotten to do? Are you making enough money, and do you have enough financial security? Try to answer these questions as honestly as you can. Do it for yourself. Remember, no one is judging you. You have to be honest with yourself if you're going to make the changes you need to make.
After that, you might want to seek outside help. Sometimes, all it takes is a career assessment tests. Other times, making an appointment with a career counselor might be a good idea. There are many career coaches out there who, for a reasonable fee, will listen to you and help you make the right decisions. Not only will they have helpful words for you, but they will also have some resources that can help you find the connections you need for career education, job placement, and training. Best of all, they can help you honestly listen to yourself and determine which career options are the best. Sometimes, all it takes is a helpful ear.
