Most children learn in school that copying something from a resource word for word and then turning it in to a teacher is a huge problem, and that will mean they will fail. This is often a person’s first experience with copyright, and learning that what someone else has created can not be copied without penalty. However, it seems that most are not aware that the same thing applies to what you find online. The copyright laws Internet are the same as elsewhere.
This problems is huge online, and it does not just apply to the written word either. It also applies to photographs and videos. The person who created each of those owns the copyright and they have a right to protect their work. People have no problems stealing anything they find to use for their own projects, thus depriving the creator the use of their own material. It would seem that some think copyright laws Internet are different than they are elsewhere. They are not.
One of the biggest problems with copyright laws Internet-wise are those who steal written copy. They copy and paste what they like, and post it elsewhere. They may even copy it and then submit for pay elsewhere. What they don’t realize is that the person who wrote that copy may be getting paid for each page view, and by doing this, they are depriving them of the money they should be earning from it. Even if they aren’t, it is still not legal to do this. Though you may think it is okay to do this because you aren’t making a profit, you would again be wrong. Creators own these things the same way they own their car or their house. You are not free to decide what to do with it. That is solely up to them.
If you aren’t sure about copyright laws Internet, you should always ask before you use something, even if you want to put it into your blog. The correct thing to do would be to have the first few sentences in your blog and then a link to the original so the person can then go read it as the author intended. You should never take or use a photograph without asking. Many problems with copyright laws Internet would be avoided if people just asked permission rather than assuming they can take what they want. It is not unheard of for a web site to be pulled down by a hosting service because the material on it was stolen from someone else.
