Black Opal Brilliance

By: Chris Sussan

Opals are one of the most beautiful gems that can be found. These stones come in a remarkable selection of color and design, making them an extraordinary choice for jewelry. Opals have an interesting history and are fascinating to learn about.

What Does A Black Opal Look Like?

Opals are found mainly in Australia, although they have been mined in South America and even in Idaho in the United States. These gems are included in the local stories that the Aborigine people tell about the creator coming to Earth and stepping on the ground and creating the Opal.

In 1849 the first opals were noticed in Australia at a cattle ranch. Once word got out about these beautiful gems, they then became the goal of many miners in the Australian outback. The prospectors would dig deep holes and sift through dirt looking for opals. Today technology has made this pursuit a little easier, and some of the most amazing opals have come from Australia.

The term black opal is one that is given to a gem that has a basic background color of black. On top of this color can be blues, reds, greens and even golds. The black opal is considered the top of the line as far as opals are graded. The black opal has deep colors that make it very desirable and a spectacular gem.

An opal will also contain in its name the type of design that occurs on the gem. The black opal may be called a black opal church window. This not only describes the basic grade of the opal, but also the color design that occurs upon the opal. Some common names are peacock, lightening, or flame. All of these give an idea as to the rich display that will be seen on the black opal.

A black opal is a gem that can create a big impression. This gem has the ability to contain so many colors it can appear to be alive with color. Although many consumers have not been exposed to the black opal, it is an option when purchasing jewelry. The black opal is thought to bring its wearer health, and some people have been known to purchase and wear this gem for that purpose.

There are many amazing gems that are sometimes not considered when contemplating jewelry. The black opal is an outstanding stone that is unique and would make a great choice for a jewelry selection.
