Blue Sapphires Stunning Beauty

By: Jean Houston

Blue sapphires are brilliant gemstones that make wonderful jewelry. People in the market for a spectacular gemstone should consider a blue sapphire. Diamonds will probably cost more than a blue sapphire, but they probably will not be as beautiful as a blue sapphire. These gemstones come in a variety of the color blue and some of them are more valuable than others. Many people think of blue sapphires as an exclusive group, but there are sapphires of many different colors. There are sapphires in a whole range of colors from black to white.

The shades of blue in a sapphire can make a difference in the value of these gemstones. Some sapphires appear blue in the outdoor light, but these sometimes turn purple in the indoor light. Some jewelers bake blue sapphires to enhance the color of the gemstone. These stones are heated to very high temperatures to achieve particular colors. Natural blue sapphires are mined in several countries including Sri Lanka, Thailand and Madagascar. These beautiful gemstones are also found in a couple of places in the United States. Synthetic sapphires in a variety of colors including blue are also available, but these stones are not as valuable as the natural stones. One of the largest blue sapphires is known as the Logan Sapphire, and this immense gemstone is kept in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

Blue Sapphires Last Forever

Blue sapphires are valuable because they are hard stones that last forever. These beautiful stones are also very tough stones. Sapphires have a unique feature in some of the stones. These gemstones appear to have a star radiating from the middle of the gemstone. These star patterns appear especially under overhead light. Some of these stars are very faint, but others have a clear, distinct star pattern. The value of the sapphire can depend on the clarity of the star pattern.

Blue sapphires can make fantastic gifts. Although these are not as hard as diamonds, these gemstones are very hard, and they will last for many years. A sapphire given to a child will probably last long enough to pass on to their children and grandchildren. Although some jewelers heat sapphires to improve the color of the gemstones, many experts do not believe that this is appropriate, and the value of the gemstone can be affected by the treatment of the stone. A completely natural stone is usually more valuable than the stones that have been heated. Sapphires make fantastic jewelry, but sapphires are also used for commercial reasons.
