By: Mick Thompson

Organic foods are foods that are commonly grown or reared according to standards. Produce like fruits and vegetables are usually grown without any human wastes and sewage for fertilizer. They are also free of the conventional pesticides that are sometimes dangerous not only to the insects but also to people. Livestock that are organic have been reared without any use of growth hormones and their feeds are usually organic also.

The Benefits of Organic Food

The benefits of organic food are all beneficial for people. These foods and produce are thoroughly screened for chemicals and other elements that could make them hazardous to people in the long run. The screening not only assures us of the organic food being chemical and poison free but it also assures the consumers that they have the best possible foods available since food with defects can be seen while screening and they are excluded from those sent to markets and supermarkets.

Other benefits of organic food is that they taste better and they are healthier compared to those sprayed with pesticide and fertilized by artificial fertilizers. The soil on which these plants are grown are usually well maintained and also organically kept so there is no worry of having chemicals or poisons in the fruits or vegetables. Livestock that are organic are also fed organic feeds to maintain high standards.

Some benefits of organic food are the health of both the consumers and the workers of the organic farms. Consumers benefit because their food is clean and healthy without any poisons of chemicals while the farm workers benefit because they do not handles poisons and other chemicals which are dangerous to their health. Benefits of organic food also include no antibiotic given to livestock which can promote antibiotic resistant pathogens in people.

Other benefits of organic food are the conservation of our water resources and the conservation of nature itself. No use of chemicals and other harmful fertilizers save water from being used to wash them off and also save the soil and other plants from absorbing the wash off residue which goes to drains and canals.

The conservation of the rural farming unit is among the benefits of organic food. Because it is the small farms and family owned farms that produce most organic food, they have a chance to sustain themselves and keep up with the trend of the markets. The nutritional value of organically grown food is also higher compared to others.
