4th Beach, Clifton, Cape Town, South Africa

By: D.Tolken

Cape Town's
most famous beach, with International blue flag status (one of
the best rated beaches in the world) has become a mega tourist
attraction and is packed on just about any sunny day during the
summer season (October - March).

The reason for 4th Beach's popularity is its location.
The surrounding suburb of Clifton actually acts like a shield
against the prevailing South-East wind in summer. This means
that you can enjoy calm wind free sun bathing on most days.

Another reason of course is the beautiful Cape Town people. Cape
Town has about 4 women for each man. This is of course one of
Cape Town's great legends, but I must confess, it's true!

Due to Cape Town being South Africa's fashion capitol, each
summer sees an influx of models from all over the world. Many of
them are based on the Atlantic seaboard (Camps Bay, Clifton and
Llandudno) due to the sheer beauty of the scenery. That accounts
for the 4 to 1 ratio in Cape Town...and in turn, it also brings
them to 4th Beach.

There are actually also 3rd, 2nd and 1st beaches at Clifton,
which are popular among gay and more family oriented visitors
that doesn't have the pre-birth bodily figures any more. You can
move from one beach to the other if you're willing to negotiate
the rocky paths between beaches. Camps Bay beach is also about 5
minutes away by car and has its own following. There are some
great sundowner spots within walking distance, like La Med. Just
ask anyone on the beach for directions.

Some beach going tips:

Come early! Parking becomes a problem after 10:30 in the morning.

Bring loads of sun screen (factor 30+ for block and factor 8 to
15 for tanning). There are umbrellas and deck chairs available
for rent as well as stalls with refreshments.

Never leave your valuables unattended.

Be prepared for brain freeze when cooling off in the water, it's
really cold!!

Please leave the beach clean!
