Get to know your clipart

By: Florie Lyn Masarate

Before the inventions of the more modern graphic designs,
pictures and animations, everybody loves using clipart. Why
clipart? They can quite convenient up to now. They are already
there ready whenever you need them in your prints. All you have
to do is click on them and copy paste. Along with this, there
are cd-roms offering thousands of clipart to choose from.
Different assortments and according to different categories too.
Clipart saves you the trouble of having to make your own image.
Not only time consuming, not all people have the artistic vein
in them to produce one.

Ever heard of copyrights? Well, as these clipart are made by
certain companies, there can be doubt that these arts have their
own copyright. Having a copyright means that other people do not
have the right to use and credit them as their own, this is
putting it mildly. There are legal proceedings and actions that
would be complicated to discuss and explain regarding copyright.
With this are the “don’ts” about clipart.

You cannot resell clipart. Let us say, you liked this certain
clipart and decided to make some changes before putting it on
your website. By putting it on your site, your sole purpose is
to sell it. If you haven’t known it yet, you are breaking the
law. That is, the law of the clipart copyright and license
agreement.

You cannot create obscene graphics using these clipart. There is
what they call Corel’s license agreement that states “you may
not create scandalous, obscene or immoral works using the
clipart and photo images”. If you want to make those kinds,
create them yourself. Why create them in the first place?

You cannot pass them on to other people and make it look like it
is yours. Buy yourself a multi-use license if you want to do
this. Buying clipart gives you the right to use it on only one
computer. If you want to share them with your friends, relatives
or other people, you have to purchase a license to do so.

Clipart is something that people take for granted. The common
misconception is that once they have it, they can do anything
they like to these images. As all other creations, they too have
their own copyright that people should know about. Better
knowing the facts first than be into something that you do not
expect to happen.

Get to know more about clipart and are there behind these
images.
